Production Day 3

Tuesday 29th November 2011
16:30 - 17:00
Bishop Theatre

Today we planned to film the scene inside of the photo booth. We used the HD Video Camera, a large Tripod and the Lighting equipment. We set up the piano stool in front of the stage curtain, where our actors would sit down for their 4 photos. Masuda was kept behind at Tower Hamlets College, so filming didn't start until 17:20, but after quite a few takes we managed to get finished and packed up just before 18:00

Photo Booth Filming

To film the scene where our actors are in a photo booth, we decided our school theatre would be suitable as the stage curtain is similar to the back drop in Justin Bieber's 'Misteltoe' music video which has a christmas look to it.

Billy contacted the person in charge.

These are the images we took whilst filming

Contacting Westfield Ice Rink

Billy emailed the ice rink at Westfield in Stratford, as we were previously unsuccessful in gaining access to an ice rink.

Luckily, Westfield replied with a positive response.

We then had to discuss with our teacher the insurance we can gain as a school project. Unfortunately, we were unable to use the ice rink as our insurance didn't cover the public, therefore we were not allowed to film in case they were caught in our footage.

Music Video Draft

We made a draft of our music video to enable us to see what else we need to film or anything we must change. We have used clips off you tube from the films/videos we are referencing or use story board images as we have not yet filmed those scenes.

Production Day 2

Monday 21st November 2011
17:00 - 19:00
Canary Wharf

Today we went to Canary Wharf to film the Performance scenes with our main lead. We used the HD Video Camera, a large Tripod and the Dolly. Even though it was dark, we found an area which was lit up by christmas lights in trees, which prevented our footage being too dark. We filmed our main lead walking whilst miming, although he didn't know the lyrics properly so when we watched out footage back and synchronised it with the music, it wasn't clear that he was miming the correct lyrics.

Production Day 1

Saturday 19th November 2011
13:45 - 18:00
Hyde Park

Today we went to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, with both our actors. We used the HD Video Camera and a large Tripod. We filmed around 20minutes of footage to use for our flash back scenes of their date. We were scheduled to meet at Wapping Station at 13:45 and travel to Hyde Park together, however our main lead was an hour late, so we didn't set off until 14:50. The sun set at around 15:50, therefore a lot of our filming was done after sun set and most of the footage was too dark.

Filming Schedule

This was the first filming schedule that I created, however we had to make changes and cancellations due to problems with our actors

This is the final film schedule, of the days we actually ended up filming.

Test Shoot

This is the test shoot of our performer (not in costume) miming the lyrics to the song we are using, Chris Brown - Should've Kissed You. We did this to enable us to watch the ability of our performer, although he is still yet to thoroughly learn the lyrics.

Actor Profiles

These are profiles on the actors we will be using.

The Artist

Name: Martin Filani
Age: 17
Hair Colour: Black
Eye Colour: Brown
Ethnicity: Black British

The reason for choosing our main artist as a Black British male, was because I wanted to reinforce the conventions of  theR&B genre of having a Black male lead. As my video follows the conventions of the R&B genre from the 80's/90's, where it is based on the relationship/romance between a boy and a girl, I recognised that most of my audience would be female, so using an attractive male lead would gain more attention.

This is the weekly timetable of our main artist, I attained this so we would know the times he is available for filming.

The Girl

Name: Masuda Khatun
Age: 17
Hair Colour: Dark Brown
Eye Colour: Brown
Ethnicity: Bangladeshi

The reason that I chose a muslim Bangladeshi female to be the main girl in our music video, is because I wanted to challange the representations of women in the music videos of R&B males. Despite R&B female singers portraying themselves as strong and powerful women, when women are featured in male videos, they are always presented as inferior and objects for men to look at. In addition to my portrayal of an independant women, I decided to represent the more modern and westernised muslim Bangladeshi women by displaying my actress as the love interest in my video. To add to this, as my video would be following the more romantic side of R&B, I decided that using an attractive female was important to gain a male audience.

Kissing Scene Idea

Following on from the placard scene, I will continue to reference the film 'Love Actually' up until the kiss. However, I have gained other ideas from different films to use when creating the kiss, which will be the finale moment that the whole music video has been building up to. Similar to 'Love Actually', when the girl runs up to the boy to kiss him, in the film 'The Last Song', the female is again shown to be taking control and running to kiss the boy, portraying her as an independant woman.

In many romance films, on an important kiss between a 'couple', the camera sometimes rotates around them to enhance the importance of the kiss. This was done in films such as 'What Happens In Vegas' and 'Life As We Know It'.

Photo Booth Idea

When thinking of ways to include voyeurism, we thought of using a television or cinema screen, photos or videos on a mobile phone and photos being taken by a photobooth. Initially, even though it was our best idea, we didn't think using a photobooth would be very simple and therefore not effective. However, I like the way it was done in the music video to the song 'Mistletoe' by Justin Bieber and we aim to use it in a similar way in our video.

Placard Scene Ideas

Initially, we got the idea for the 'placard scene' from the 2003 film 'Love Actually', written and directed by Richard Curtis, which follows the love lives of eight different couples and is set in London, during a month before Christmas. Originally, we were going to combine this scene with our 'cinema scene' until we refined our idea, but as the film is set in London and in the winter, fortunately the placard scene will fit even better with our new idea.

We chose to use the 'placard scene' as an intertextual reference before the video to the song 'paradise' by Coldplay was released. However, I liked the way they used placards as a subtitle effect to the lyrics of the song. This changed our mind on what would be written on our placards, instead of having similar sentences to that in the film 'Love Actually', as Billy suggested for the placards to read the lyrics to our song.

The key concept of our videos narrative, is that the main artist isn't able to communicate his feelings to the main girl, which is a similar idea portrayed in the music video to Taylor Switf's song 'You Belong With Me'. In the video, the couple find it hard to communicate with each other so they do it through placards. This is similar to our idea, where the main artist will use placards at the end to tell the girl how he feels.

Ice Skating Idea

When discussing the narrative theories we can apply to our video, to include Vladimir Propp's theory about the characters involved in a narrative-based video, we came up with the idea for the ice skating scene. We had the idea that our artist would take his girl ice skating, and to represent our artist as the 'hero' and the girl as the 'damsel in distress' he will help her and either save her from falling or come to her rescue when she falls.
